What is Root Canal Therapy?
A root canal is a dental procedure performed on an injured or diseased tooth, in order to save the tooth from extraction. When the pulp of the tooth (or the inner tissue of the tooth) becomes infected or dies, either from a fracture or a crack in the tooth, a cavity or an injury to the root, a root canal can save the tooth from extraction. Unfortunately, teeth cannot heal themselves, and if the infected or dead pulp remains untreated, extreme pain can result which could ultimately lead to a dental abscess or possible tooth loss.
Symptoms that might Suggest the Need for a Root Canal
- Tooth is sensitive to cold or hot
- The tooth hurts when biting
- There is throbbing and/or severe tooth pain
- The area is swollen
- You have a bad taste in your mouth

The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is a very common and simple procedure. The first step is the administration of local anesthetic to the tooth and the area surrounding it, to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure. Next, a dam made out of rubber will be placed around the tooth in order to keep it free from bacteria from your saliva. A hole will then be created in the tooth in order to remove the inflamed or infected pulp, and then the root canal will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the cleaned canal will be filled and sealed. After healing has occurred, a crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth in order to protect it and restore it to full function. Following a root canal, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
